Following a year of renewed government promises to tackle mental health, a nurse describes her own experiences with Bipolar Disorder.

Staff Nurse Elaine Francis, 32, who was diagnosed with the condition 5 years ago, outlines the cycle from the euphoria of the ‘hypomania’ phase to the spiral into depression, the additional challenges of her working environment and how she copes with Christmas.

Bipolar disorder is thought to affect as little as 2% of the population of the UK. Research has yet to find a consensus on either the cause or a cure for the illness.
