In Pictures: large waves batter Sunderland seafront

A flood alert for Roker and Seaburn was put in place because of the high tide between 3:30 and 5:30.

Strong waves meant that Seaburn beach virtually disappeared as waves crashed against the seawall, with some of them even coming over the top and onto the promenade.

Although the strong waves battered the shore, there were plenty of people standing to admire the scene, trying to take photos without getting wet.
