Participants will be ‘running home for Christmas’ this December as the annual Christmas run will take place at Souter Lighthouse on Sunday, December 16.
Two different distance runs (of 2km and 5km) will take place on the day, stretching along the coastal edges and providing beautiful views of the coast.
Sue Barnes, events coordinator, spoke to SR News about the race turn-out for the first ever Christmas run in 2017. Sue said:
“There were 96 participants – 40 runners on the 5k and 56 on the 2k – taking part in the festivities on what was a very cold and wet/icy morning.
“A lot of cold, Christmas Elves & Santas took part.”
Great Run Local (GRL) at Souter Lighthouse started in September 2017 and the staff are made up of regular volunteers and 4 event coordinators who arrange the usual events. Sue Barnes gave an insight into the organisation behind the weekly runs:
“Each week we need 4 marshals, plus 2 on timing and we like to have both a 2k and 5k tail runner, to make sure everyone is safe around the course. We can manage with 5 volunteers plus the event coordinator – but its tight!”
The Christmas event takes place at Souter Lighthouse from 9:30-22:30pm on Sunday, December 16, 2018. If you would like any more information or to volunteer for the Christmas run, visit https://www.greatrunlocal.org/volunteer.
