Newcastle high school hosts annual Senior Citizenship Christmas Party

A Newcastle high school is running their annual Senior Citizenship Christmas Party.

The students and teachers of George Stephenson High School, in Killingworth Newcastle, have worked together to make sure this year is the best one yet.

Students and staff have organised a quiz, performances from the school’s Music and Drama students, bingo and a raffle which are all set in place when the elderly attend the event. As well as the activities, refreshments will be served throughout.

A student said: “We would like to help make sure that everyone has a lovely Christmas and the opportunity to put on this event means that they all receive a Christmas party and an enjoyable day out.

“They can meet up with friends and meet new people to celebrate Christmas and have fun – potentially even winning the bingo or some raffle prizes.”

When the event first started in 2001, it was organised by a teacher and only 15 to 20 people attended. It has grown in the years since and staff and students are expecting the turnout to be the biggest yet as they have increased the number of tickets to 150.

Rebecca Tate, teacher at George Stephenson High School, said: “The students design a poster which they put up in the local areas such as shopping centres, community centres and care homes.

“Many of the people who attend have attended every year since it started, so they are very keen to call up early to reserve their tickets.”

The event is held at Killingworth Social Club on Wednesday, December 12. To find out if there is any tickets left contact George Stephenson High School on 0191 216 1115.
