University of Sunderland to set up free science club for 11-16 year-old ‘Bright Sparks’

A North East university is hoping to get young people fired up about science this week, with the launch of a free club, Bright Sparks.

The University of Sunderland’s Bright Sparks STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) club is for children aged 11-16 years. Members of the club get involved in a series of STEAM related free activities that take place on the University campus, and at other locations such as The Centre for Life and Beamish Museum.

Bright Sparks launches this Saturday (21 October) from 10.30am-2pm, at the Sciences Complex, City Campus, Chester Road.

Anyone wishing to attend must contact or 0191 515 2731 by noon on Friday, 20 October with your name, number of guests and if you require any parking.

Originally launched in 2001, thousands of young people have become engaged with sciences and the arts through the Bright Sparks club. This Saturday children and their families can get a taster of the club’s activities with session on:

  • LEGO® Robotics
  • Escape Room
  • Animation Station
  • Sphero Challenges

Free parking and refreshments will be available as well as the opportunity for new members to join the club.
