As Britain wakes up to a hung parliament, here’s how the North East reacted to election night and the results on Twitter.
Sunderland Central MP, Julie Elliott, held her seat with 55.5% of the vote. She tweeted to say she will “continue to fight our corner at every opportunity.”

The Conservatives held Hexham, with MP Guy Opperman quick to praise the higher voter turnout in the constituency.
Pleased with #Hexham increased % vote share / voter support but great to see more people voted in #Hexham than before#democracyunitesus

There was also a shock on the night, as Newcastle declared their first result before Sunderland.
Newcastle Central is first constituency to declare – beating Sunderland, which has had first declaration in country in last 6 GEs. #GE2017
