7 Ways to Enjoy Christmas in Sunderland This Year

In the light of upcoming Christmas, we are offering you seven things that you must experience in Sunderland this year. If you like festive shopping or like decorating the Christmas tree or spending time with the family watching Christmas movies, we have activities to suit everyone’s interests.

  1. Christmas lights switch on

Happening for a second year on Keel square, this year’s Christmas lights switch on will bring more festive spirit in the cold weather. Marking the beginning of Christmas celebrations the event is not to be missed. Special guests on night will be The Voice star Chloe Castro, who along with performances by local schools will entertain the audience. By tradition the event will conclude with spectacular fireworks display. The show starts at 5pm on 17 November.

Go ahead to Keel Square from 24 November until Christmas Eve to experience the special ice rink build under the magical carpet of lights. Part of Frost Village- Christmas programme for Sunderland, the ice rink is a great way to have fun with the whole family or friends and learn some new skills.

 

  1. Christmas Tree Trail

A tree trail is being organized at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens from 26 November until 3 January. Families with children are encouraged to come along and get involved with following the trail of Christmas trees around the Museum, while winning festive prizes, and learning about Christmas traditions. The price of the ticket is £2.50.

If you fancy spending your free time shopping, or if you’re late with Christmas presents, a traditional Christmas stalls will be placed in the city center. There will be crafts, Christmas decorations and freshly prepared food from around the world.

The Brides shopping centre will also have extended opening hours. From 12 December till 19th on weekdays the opening times will be from 9:00am – 08:00pm.

 

  1. Ice Gala Extravaganza

After the success of Ice Extravaganza last year, this year the organizers of Frost Village have invited professional Disney on Ice figure skaters, CBBC Ice Stars and local skaters.  Everyone can enjoy the performance as the event is free. It will take place on Keel Square on 24 November from 6-7pm.

 

  1. Glass blowing workshops

What a better way to experience Christmas that making your own glass bauble? The National Glass Centre is offering workshops where with guidance everyone can blow his own Christmas bauble using molten glass at over 1100 degrees centigrade.   1. Reindeer wonderland

This fantastic event is organized by Sunderland Student’s Union, on 29 November at City Campus. Visitors will enjoy a closer look of real life reindeers together with Santa and his sleigh. To remember this moment you can have your photograph taken on Santa’s sleigh and receive a FREE key ring with your photograph.
