BREAKING: 17-year-old boy dies after rescue by RNLI

The 17-year-old boy who was rescued by the RNLI at Roker Beach yesterday (August 30) has died of his injuries.

He was taken to the RVI hospital with serious injuries.

At 3.22pm on August 30, two 17-year-old males were seen in the water at the mouth of the Wear, near to the Old Pier at Sunderland Yacht Club.

It is thought they had been in a dinghy when they got out to swim in the water and got into difficulty.

Two 17-year-old females were also in the dinghy and were rescued along with another 17-year-old male, before the search operation for the other 17-year-old boy.

The other three teenagers remain in a stable condition.
