A man has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after falling from the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland.
At around 4.10am this morning (Saturday) police received a report of a man on the wrong side of the railings at Wearmouth Bridge.
Emergency services attended the incident and officers began to try to bring the man back to safety.
However, at around 4.45am the man fell from the railings into the water where he suffered life-threatening injuries.
The coastguard were able to assist in reaching the man, and he was taken to hospital by paramedics where his condition is described as critical.
