An amazing experience will be given to one lucky winner, on the same day as Her Majesty The Queen celebrates her birthday.

The Gateshead Council will be turning the famous Millennium Bridge red, white and blue and it is hoped a Gateshead 90-year-old will help to celebrate this royal milestone by pressing the button to light up the bridge at dusk on April 21.

Gateshead Council wants to hear about residents who are also celebrating their 90th birthday this year. The nominations are now open. The community is asked to nominate anyone they know who was born in 1926, saying why they are extra special and why they should be the one to take part in the lighting up ceremony.

Perhaps they are a fabulous neighbour, an active member of the community, a local inspiration or a wonderful mum, dad, grandparent or great grandparent?

Or, if you are 90 this year and live in Gateshead, don’t wait for someone else to nominate you – nominate yourself!

On the big day, the 90 year old (or nearly 90 year old) VIP will be collected from home, have tea in the Mayor’s Parlour at Gateshead Civic Centre and then be driven in the mayoral car to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge for the short ceremony. They will then be taken home, after what is hoped will be a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

The closing date for nominations is Thursday 14th April. Please email mayorsoffice@gateshead.gov.uk or write to: Mayor’s Secretary, Mayor’s Office, Gateshead Council, Regent Street, Gateshead NE8 1HH, heading the nomination “Queen’s 90th birthday”. Please include your phone number.
