Young Fulwell scroll makers get arty for National Shakespeare Week

Sunderland Fulwell Library is one of the first libraries to have marked the start of National Shakespeare Week by running an activity day.

The Library has run an event, called Shakespeare Crafts, where pupils from Redby Academy have had their first encounter with Shakespeare and took part in creating their own Shakespeare portrait as well as testing their quill skills.

Students Leah Canavan, Holly Briggs and Charlie Huntley, all aged 10, told of how they used “felt and ribbons” to make Shakespeare’s face and “Romeo and Juliet” was their favourite play.

Mrs Leanne Smith, teacher at Redby Academy, said the morning has “generated a lot of interest” within the children, and even though the students do not touch upon Shakespeare until their final year of primary school, today has been a “great taster” for the students.
