The trial of the former Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson has entered its third day today.

A 16-year-old girl has appeared in court via video link, telling a jury she was no longer trying to protect the footballer Adam Johnson, after Orlando Pownall QC , defence, asked the girl “whether she was still trying to protect the 28-year-old”.

She replied: “No, because he did nothing to protect me and he made me out to be a liar.”

The girl, who was 15 at the time of alleged offences, was in tears for much of her exchange with Johnson’s defence barrister.

The former Black Cats winger denies two counts of sexual activity with a child.

The trial is continuing at Bradford Crown Court this afternoon.
