Sunderland Football Club have terminated the contract of Adam Johnson with ‘immediate effect’.

The club released a short statement today, in which they have confirmed that the 28-year-old midfielder’s contract has been terminated.

The winger, who played for the Black Cats since 2012, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual activity with a child and another of grooming on Wednesday.

Johnson, from Castle Eden, County Durham, faces trial on Friday, where he is reported to deny another two charges of sexual activity with a girl under 16.

In a statement Sunderland AFC said: “In light of the his guilty pleas, the club has terminated his contract with immediate effect.”

The club said that they will not make any further comments.
