The 15-year-old girl swept to sea in Cullercoats has been named.

The teenager has been named as Caitlin Marie Ruddy, from Newbiggin Hall, in Newcastle.

She died in hospital following the incident in Cullercoats Bay, North Tyneside yesterday.

Officers were called to the incident at 7.44pm on Saturday night (January 16), following concerns about a group of teenagers seen on the north pier at Cullercoats Bay, where the sea was running high.

Miss Ruddy’s three friends managed to walk back to safety but she was swept into the sea by a large wave.

The coastguard and RNLI were called to assist and a member of the public rescued the girl from the water on the south side of the bay.

All four teenagers were taken to Cramlington Hospital.

The three teenagers who walked away are described as being well after the incident.

Miss Ruddy died in hospital on Saturday evening.

Our thoughts are with her family at this time.
