Sunderland City Council is urging people to remain vigilant and take extra care on the roads following today’s heavy rain and wind.

A Met Office Amber warning of rain is in force until midnight tonight (Tuesday), and although the rain seemed to have eased temporarily, the wet weather is expected to continue for the rest of the week and into the weekend.

The Council is continuing to work with the police to tackle problems caused by the adverse weather and to monitor the situation along the River Wear at Fatfield.

Roker Pier also remains closed and the Council is urging people to take extra care on beaches and the promenade at Sunderland’s seafront with high winds and large waves expected due to the stormy weather.

Councillor Michael Mordey, Portfolio Holder for City Services, said: “We’re continuing to work closely with the emergency services to tackle any problems caused by the adverse weather.

“We’d ask people to remain vigilant when they’re out and about, to allow extra time for their journeys, and to take particular care on the roads due to large volumes of standing water. ”
