Police appeal for witnesses to pensioner’s car crash

NORTHUMBRIA Police are appealing for witnesses after a driver in his 70s was left in a life-threatening condition as the result of a collision in Sunderland.

At about 3.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 19 October) a Renault Megane collided with street furniture in the Leechmere Road area of Sunderland.

The car was spotted travelling south east along Essen Way, when it drove across a roundabout and came to a halt in a nearby garden.

Police officers at the scene administrated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to the driver, a 76-year-old man, before he was taken to hospital, where yesterday he remained in a life-threatening condition.

Officers are now appealing for any witnesses and are especially interested in hearing from anybody who has dash-cam footage.

People are asked to contact officers by using the ‘Report an Incident’ function on Northumbria Police’s website or by calling 101, quoting log 611 191020.
