On Sunderland City Council’s website there are 59 council controlled electric car charging stations advertised. However, SR News can exclusively reveal that there are only 45.

There are three places listed on the councils’ website where no charging points exist, and seven places where the number of charging points is less than stated.

The council also list two charging points at the Software Centre, but there is no public access as you can only enter the car park with a pin code.

Sunderland City Council have been contacted for comment.

This look into Sunderland’s charging points came after the news that a third of Newcastle City Council’s 105 electric car charging stations are broken.

Despite Sunderland City Council having almost a quarter less charging points than they advertise, they perform better than Newcastle with 36 out of 45 points (80 per cent) currently working.

SR News contacted other local councils and of those who responded, all performed better than Newcastle.

A Gateshead Council spokesperson said: “There are 18 publicly accessible charging bays in Gateshead of which four are out of service [78 per cent work].”

A spokesperson for South Tyneside Council said: “Of the 23 public posts we presently own, six are currently out of service [74 per cent work].

“Whilst that is the case, they are all scheduled for repair in the coming weeks.”

SR News checked all of the electric car charging points listed on Sunderland City Council’s website. Check this out in our video above.
