North East MP warns no deal Brexit will destroy jobs in the region

A North East MP has warned Parliament of the risk to the North East’s export industry should no deal be made on Brexit.

In the House of Commons, Newcastle Labour MP Chi Onwurah demanded answers from the Secretary of State for International Trade, Liam Fox, on how the Government were planning to protect North East businesses.

“The North East is the only region that exports more than it imports,” she told the House. “Employers, employees, trade associations and trade unions all agree that a no deal Brexit will destroy jobs.”

60 per cent of the North East’s £3.16billion worth of exports, during the three months up to September 2017, were to EU member countries.

In response, Mr Fox said: “What the government are doing is to try to ensure that we get a good deal with the European Union – a free, open, comprehensive trade deal that enables our businesses to continue to trade with the substantial market that is the European Union.”
