Bright Future for Sunderland Illuminations

Sunderland Illuminations were back again this year, proving to be even bigger and better than ever before.

The event drew in more than 200,000 visitors and made around £1.5 million, according to Councillor John Kelly.

Last year, the council introduced a £1 charge for entry to the event. Councillor Kelly explained that a fixed budget means money needs to be raised in order to support next year’s Illuminations.

The illuminations are big part of Sunderland’s history and culture.

“You remembered your visit to the Illuminations,” Councillor Kelly said, “so we wanted to start those new memories for the next generation of children coming through.”
