Brave Bradley Lowery has sadly lost his battle with neuroblastoma – following a long fight against the disease.

The 6-year-old from County Durham captured hearts across the region, the country and the world with his determination to overcome cancer, pride for Sunderland AFC and his infectious smile.

The youngster, from Blackhall, was diagnosed with stage 4 high risk neuroblastoma at the tender age of 18 months.

After major surgery and chemotherapy Bradley went into remission. But in July last year the Lowery family found out that Bradley’s cancer had returned.

The family set out to fundraise £700,000 for treatment abroad in America and were stunned by the overwhelming response from the public and a generous £200,000 from Everton Football Club.

However, in December 2016, Bradley and his family were devastated to learn that his neuroblastoma was terminal. The focus of the fundraising campaign shifted to support the family in making precious memories.

Throughout his life, the fighter was a shining light. Bradley gained a momentous following worldwide on social media through his page Bradley Lowery’s Fight Against Neuroblastoma and on Twitter, where hundreds of thousands of people showed their support.

He was a mascot on a number of occasions for his beloved Black Cats club – Sunderland AFC and led the England team out at Wembley with “best friend” Jermain Defoe.

The friendship he struck up with the former Sunderland AFC striker touched many – with the star even attending Bradley’s birthday bash in May this year.

Bradley also appeared at the Grand National after being given honorary 41st place on the race card and attended the Sports Personality of the Year awards as a guest of honour.

He was also honoured with an award of his own. He received the Child of Courage award at the Pride of the North East awards earlier this year.

Bradley’s legacy will live on through the Bradley Lowery Foundation which will help other families affected by childhood cancer.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the Lowery family.
