Sunderland’s opinion on MTV’s gender neutral awards

SRNews went into the heart of Sunderland to ask whether or not award ceremonies should adopt MTV’s genderless accolade model.

The MTV Awards saw Emma Watson, who is the ambassador of the HeForShe campaign, win the genderless ‘Best Actor’ award for her part playing ‘Belle’ in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, with Millie Bobby Brown also picking up the TV award for her role as ‘Eleven’ in Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’.

As part of the acceptance speech Emma Watson said: “In acting for me, it’s about putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and that doesn’t need to be in separate categories.”

Although striving for equality is a positive – could genderless awards backfire and mean a gender could actually end up being ostracised? Watch our video to see what Sunderland thinks and tweet and comment your opinion!
