Newcastle animal shelter celebrates #NationalAdoptAShelterPetDay

Today is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. The day was created to raise awareness for the thousands of shelter pets who are waiting to be adopted.

Those with adopted pets are encouraged to celebrate the day by using the hashtag #NationalAdoptAShelterPetDay with a photo of their animal.

Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter is an animal shelter within Newcastle.

Chief Executive, Leyla Rutter, said: “To be honest, it’s something we do regularly.

“We have a big fun day where we open up to the public and ask them to come down. People can bring their dogs along to have a go on the agility.

She added: “We get animals arriving everyday. They can be stray animals that somebody has found and brought in.

“We get donations of food and bedding. People donate towels and blankets which make our animals more comfortable.”

Animals up for adoption are on the website along with a description about them as a way to encourage their adoption.

Sammy

A dog, called Sammy, is a tan Greyhound and is said to be only one. He is described as being a “friendly and affectionate boy”.

Bonny

A cat, called Bonny, is black and white and described as being a “timid girl who needs some love and attention”.

There are also animals such as rabbits.

The shelter is asking members of the public to come along on May 2 with their dogs as they are hosting a fun day.
