University of Sunderland academic “Dapper Dan” Ward is in the running for a prestigious fashion award.

The media lecturer is already well-known among students and staff for his signature look – which includes a waistcoat, tie, and pocket-watch.

Appearing on ITV game show The Chase earlier this year only boosted his fashion forward reputation, when presenter Bradley Walsh picked up on the “Dapper Dan” nickname.

Speaking to SR News, the 34-year-old media lecturer said he was “inundated with Facebook comments” after the TV show aired.

Now he has been nominated in the Stylish Mackem category in this year’s Retail and Style awards.

“Obviously, it would be a great honour for me and great for the region if I win this,” he said.

The savvy shopper said he was “very proud to be nominated” and hopes that the students at the University of Sunderland will give him their full support when the online vote is opened to the public.

“It’s a big thing for anyone in South Shields to be in the media for something other than X Factor,” he added.

SR News asked Dan about his main style icons and fashion tips for Sunderland students, which you can listen to below.

Nominations are still open for the Retail and Style awards, which are organised by Sun FM in association with The Bridges and sponsored by Sunderland BID Experience It Here!
