Councillor Lynda Scanlan, new Mayor of Sunderland

Sunderland will be having a new Mayor very soon, Councillor Lynda Scanlan.

Councillor Scanlan was sworn in at a full meeting of the Sunderland City Council.

The new Mayor will be supported during her term in the office by her long-time family friend and work colleague, Mr. Michael Horswill, who will be her Mayoral Consort.

The couple will take over the ceremonial chains of office from the previous Mayor, Councillor Doris MacKnight and her Mayoral Consort Mr. Keith MacKnight.

At their inauguration ceremony, the new Mayoral team was supported by both the children of Mayor Scanlan with their partners and her two grandsons. Mr Horswill was supported by family as well as invited friends and guests.

Councillor David Snowdon, Washington East ward member, has been sworn in by the Council as Deputy Mayor for the years 2018-2019.

Councillor Scanlan, Sunderland’s new Mayor stated: “I’m honoured to have been chosen to take on this latest challenge representing our city as

Mayor.

“I’m looking forward to using my role to help support the many community groups and charities who work so hard to help the vulnerable and young people of our city.

“Hope Spring opened a Mother and Baby Unit and plan to open a school in the city for young people with complex needs.

“The NCSPCC Childline Service is also dependent on charitable donations if it is to continue helping children in this area.”

At the inauguration ceremony of taking over the chains of office, Mayor Lynda Scanlan took a moment to thank o her predecessors by adding “We’d both like to thank Councillor MacKnight and her Mayoral Consort Keith MacKnight for their support while we were Deputies.

“They have both done a wonderful job promoting our city and I hope we’ll be able to carry on their good work.”

In response, the outgoing Mayor Councillor MacKnight said: “We both wish our new Mayor and her Mayoral Consort the best of luck, and I’m sure Lynda and Michael will do a wonderful job.

Councillor McKnight added: “I’d like to thank to everyone for helping to raise more than £14,000 for my Mayoral charities (the Phoenix Unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital, Castletown Scouts, Alzheimer’s Society).
