Sunderland’s Restaurant Week success: what it means for the city’s culinary scene

Sunderland’s restaurant week has recently come to an end, with many restaurants offering the opportunity to dine out for £5, £10 or £15.

Many restaurants were involved from all over Sunderland. This included restaurants such as El Nido Mexicana, Port of Call and The Engine Room.

The event saw many people in their numbers turning up in support for the fourth restaurant week to occur in Sunderland. It has attracted more diners than ever before.

Stephen Turnbull, owner of El Nido Mexicana, stated what the event means to him and his new business: “It’s just great for a promotion really. It gets people who don’t generally eat out to come out and try different restaurants that they wouldn’t normally try.”

Simon Munro, general manager of The Engine Room, stated: “I think that it shows that Sunderland is an excellent place to come and eat, there’s many different venues, you’ve got a variety in different styles of food everywhere so you’ve got a massive amount to choose from and excellent quality.”

The Sunderland Business Improvement District, which created the event, showed that around 15,000 people participated – adding up to a £280,000 boost to the local economy.

Sharon Appleby, Head of Business Operations at Sunderland BID, said: “There is a massive amount of support for restaurant week and it’s fantastic that people come from outside of the area to take part.

“Our research has shown that almost 50 per cent of people who took part in our survey wouldn’t have eaten out that week otherwise, which shows what a boost to the local economy it is.

“Restaurant week has been a huge success and hopefully it also acts as a catalyst for people to come back to Sunderland time and time again.”
