Young people in Sunderland would not talk to a new partner about STIs and sexual health history

Sunderland’s young people would shy away from asking a new partner about their sexual health history in fear that it would be ‘too awkward’.

Although the majority who were interviewed said that they wouldn’t mind if their partner asked them about recent testing and sexual health, the thought of asking a new sexual partner ‘hadn’t really crossed their mind’.

Investigating whether young people are aware of sexual health through education and outside the classroom the results show that talking about sex is still considered a taboo.

Young people are one of the most popular groups to contract an STI. 15-24 year olds are at risk of being diagnosed with one of the four most popular sexually transmitted diseases including; gonorrhea, genital herpes, genital warts and chlamydia.
