Lance-Corporal Trimaan Dhillon, also known as Harry Dhillon, 25, has been charged on suspicion of the murder of Alice Ruggles.

Police found the body of the 24-year-old on Wednesday 12 in Rawlings Road, Gateshead.

L Cpl Dhillon, of the royal regiment of Scotland, appeared before Newcastle Magistrates Court on Saturday. He has been remanded in custody to appear before Newcastle Crown Court tomorrow morning (Tuesday 18).

On Wednesday evening at 6.30pm Miss Ruggles was found with serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. On Thursday a man who we now know to be L Cpl Dhillon was arrested on suspicion of murder.

A police spokesman stated: “This is believed to be an isolated incident and those involved are known to each other. There is not believed to be any danger to the wider public.”

Ms Ruggles’ family said: “Alice saw the fun side of everything, she had an infectious personality and an incredible sense of humour.

“She was kind, clever and beautiful; we are struggling to come to terms with the fact that she is not with us anymore.

“She loved life, loved her friends and loved her job. She had so much to live for. Nothing, nothing can ever replace her.”

Police are urging anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at this time to get in touch on 101.
