It has been announced that student grants will continue to be abolished by the Government.

The debate took place today (January 19) in the House of Commons, when it was put forward by the Labour Party, as they wanted to stop the Government cutting maintenance grants.

The Labour motion for the Government to abandon its policy on replacing student grants with loans for lower income students was defeated by all MPs (by 303 to 292).

A double majority vote was needed for the Conservative government to carry on with their plans to abolish maintenance grants and replace them with loans.

Only England MPs voted on the motion as the decision only affects England – they were defeated by 291 to 203.
