Sunderland reacts to Jermain Defoe not being played in England match

Jermain Defoe was kept on the bench last night in the Germany – England international friendly.

The Sunderland Striker had been recalled to the squad by Gareth Southgate for the game that took place last night in Dortmund, as well as Saturday’s World Cup Qualifier against Lithuania.

England started with Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy up front, who was then replaced by Manchester United’s 19-year-old striker Marcus Rashford.

The match ended in a 1-0 defeat for Gareth Southgate’s side, with former Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski scoring the only goal of the game.
