Former Sunderland star unveils New gate at the Stadium of Light

Legendary Sunderland footballer Charlie Hurley and his teammates of 1963 have officially unveiled a new iconic gate.

The gate leads into the main west stand at Sunderland’s Stadium Of Light and has already taken its first load of fans.

The gates have already seen Sunderland defeated Hull City 3 – 0. This was their first time playing behind the iconic gates.

There will now be an annual “Charlie Hurley Day”on the day that also marked Jermain Defoe’s 150th premier league goal.

Charlie, dubbed “the king” by fans,  was joined outside the stadium by family and former squad members to mark the unveiling new gates outside Sunderland’s home ground.

A spokesperson for the club said: “We are delighted to honour him with this special tribute and celebrate his career and many years of service to the club.”

The club have remarked that they have numerous activities planned the honour ‘The King’s’ 80th birthday.
