Tyne and Wear buses to be cut back to cope with Coronavirus spread

Public Transport in Tyne and Wear is set for a major shakeup in light of the social distancing measures brought in to fight the Coronavirus.

Go North East, one of Tyne and Wear’s Biggest bus companies has announced that there services are to be scaled back to cope with the reduced demand.

From Monday 23 March Go North East will run an “Enhanced Sunday Service” where most buses will run to a Sunday timetable. Extra services are being put on early in the morning and routes that don’t usually run on a Sunday will have a special timetable

The popular Sunderland Connect service 700, 701 and 702 will continue to run its usual Monday to Saturday Service. School Buses in Tyne and Wear will continue unless the circumstances and advice changes.

Matthew Jimmison, A local bus user said: “I was surprised by the levels they’ve been cut too. I can understand why they’ve done it considering some of the buses I’ve seen and used the last few days. It’s not the best but understandable considering the circumstances.”

Go North East has joined the Tyne and Wear Metro is reducing its services to cope with the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Huw Lewis, Customer Service Director at Nexus, said: “We are constantly reviewing this situation, and are doing all we can to keep trains running. The Metro service is vital in getting people to work, including thousands of key workers in the NHS and emergency services.

“We have already seen a reduction in passenger numbers and that will decrease further as schools close and more people self-isolate.

“The health of our own employees is also of paramount importance to us, and rightly, anyone showing any symptoms is following official guidance and self-isolating”

Social distancing is a set of measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus. These measures include working from home where possible, avoiding public transport for non essential journeys and avoiding large gatherings of people.
