A third of young people in Sunderland first had sex before they were of legal age, according to a cross-section of people surveyed by SR News.
Of the 60 people who took part in the survey, 25% lost their virginity at the age of 15. The youngest age was 12.
A quarter of the respondents said they regretted their first experience, a small majority of them being women; reasons included being too young or regretting the choice of partner.
Around 9% of the people surveyed had not yet lost their virginity.
Sixty people, between the ages of 18 and 32, took part. The survey is available here.
