A large fire at Deptford Terrace is still blazing as firefighters continue to try and eliminate the flames.
The former recycling plant caught alight on Monday evening, with smoke being visible in Tynemouth and Whitby.
Sunderland City Council are currently working alongside the Fire Service, the Environment Agency, Northumbria Police and Public Health England to decide the best actions to take in the aftermath.
Lead firefighter Steve Graham revealed at a press conference that there were already concerns of the site being at risk.
The situation is being closely watched, with air quality equipment being used to monitor the smoke levels being released.
