As Britain wakes up to a hung parliament, here’s how the North East reacted to election night and the results on Twitter.
Sunderland Central MP, Julie Elliott, held her seat with 55.5% of the vote. She tweeted to say she will “continue to fight our corner at every opportunity.”

Bridget Phillipson, Houghton and Sunderland South MP, was re-elected with 59.6% of the vote.

Meanwhile, Nick Brown of Newcastle upon Tyne East – who is Jeremy Corbyn’s chief whip – Catherine Mckinnnell, Newcastle North and Chi Onwurah, Newcastle Central were all re-elected.

The Conservatives held Hexham, with MP Guy Opperman quick to praise the higher voter turnout in the constituency.

There was also a shock on the night, as Newcastle declared their first result before Sunderland.
