Was ITV Hacked During The 1975 Brit Awards Performance?

Britain’s answer to The Grammys. The Brit Awards was shrouded in controversy last night. From Skepta and Stormzy’s performances being heavily muted to Chris Martin’s disappointing performance in tribute to George Michael, the celebration of UK music was at the centre of rumours of hacking.

During the show, broadcast on ITV, The 1975, who’s frontman is the son of local legends Denise Welch and Tim Healy, performed hit single ‘The Sound.’ During their performance, it appeared hackers had intercepted the broadcast placing cruel messages about The 1975, questioning their authenticity, credibility and talent.

It was later revealed however that this was a deliberate and purposeful part of The 1975’s performance. The band decided to use their critics words against them and ensured their performance was the biggest talking point of the night. The quotes were taken from reviews of their debut album, ‘I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It’, which was nominated for best album on the night.

Earlier in the night the band, won Best British Group beating the likes of Little Mix for the award. During his speech, Healy said, “This is mental. We’ve been a band since we were 13, for 14 years now. The only thing we tried to do with our album was to get to that place… And I just want to say… if you have a platform, don’t [stay in your lane].”

Matt’s mum, Denise Welch tweeted about how proud she was of her son.

Although we’re not entirely sure if its about the band picking up an award, or for Matt’s dress sense.
