The Tyne and Wear Metro ticket system voted best in Europe at the 2015 Transport Ticketing Awards.

The ticket system beat competition from Spain and Holland at the awards, which were held in London, thanks to more than 100,000 people using the new Pop Card system.

Coun Nick Forbes, leader of Newcastle City Council, said: “The introduction of smart ticketing on Metro, delivered by Nexus for the Combined Authority, has been popular with passengers, helped increase the number of people using Metro and set high standards for quality and ease of use.”

According to Nexus, passenger numbers are up by eight per cent on last year.

Tyne and Wear Metro has introduced 225 new ticket machines at 60 stations as part of the roll-out of smart travel.
