Man raped in Argyle Square in Sunderland

A man in his 50s has been raped in Argyle Square in Sunderland City Centre.

The incident took place between 4pm and midnight on Sunday September 28, although the victim did not report the attack until Friday October 31.

Officers are carrying out enquiries, and are appealing for information. Anyone with information is asked to come forward.

Regular patrols continue to be carried out throughout Sunderland City Centre.

Acting Detective Sergeant Iain Brown said: “I’d urge anyone who may have been in Sunderland City Centre on the evening of Sunday September 28 to contact us as they may have information that can help us establish what happened, no matter how small or insignificant they think the information is it could prove crucial in helping us with our enquiries.

“Understandably the victim is distressed by what’s happened and we have specially trained officers from a dedicated team ensuring he has the support that is required, whether this be from police or other agencies and officers will continue to offer this support right through the investigation.”
