The Sunderland International Air Show will once again be host to some of the biggest names in aerobatic flying.
Sunderland City Council have announced that acts such as Gerald Cooper – Extreme Air, The Blades, The Breitling Team of Wingwalkers and Twister Duo will be the big names in this years festival.
This year is the 26th year of the show, which is the biggest free air show in Europe. The event will start at 6pm Friday July 25, with live music and a fireworks display. The festival will then continue for two days, showcasing some of the best aerobatic pilots in the world.
One of the biggest names in the line-up is Gerald Cooper, who currently holds numerous national and international awards, as well as being ranked in the top ten at World Championships.
Speaking about the event, Mr Cooper said: “Being No2 in the world means that I am lucky enough to be invited to fly at shows all around the world, however I always look forward to the Sunderland show as the volume of positive feedback that I receive from the audience is second to none.”
The Blades will also be returning for their eighth consecutive display season. The group, who are all former Red Arrows pilots, are some of the most experienced in aerobatic performance, and currently hold a world record for flying the most number of consecutive formation loops.
Also performing is The Breitling Team of Wingwalkers, who claim to be a one of a kind team that perform manoeuvres and handstands while strapped to the top wings of Boeing Stearman biplanes. Twister Duo is made up of Peter Wells and Guy Westgate, who have 53 years of experience between them, and have both represented Britain in aerobatic World Championships.
Councillor Paul Watson, who is the leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “It is great to see that once again some of the top pilots in the world will be coming along to thrill the crowds at this year’s Sunderland International Airshow. Each year we work with our delivery partner Sunderland Live to try to improve on what is already a fantastic free event for all the family.”
Sunderland Live was formed in April 2013 as a spin-out from Sunderland City Council. Their main aim is to establish Sunderland as a leading destination for events regionally, nationally and internationally, bringing events to Sunderland such as Sunderland Festival, North East Live and The Colour Run.
The full event programme will be announced in the coming weeks.
Sunderland International Air Show is a free event in Roker and Seaburn, and will run July 25 to 27, between 10am and 6pm. The event is subject to weather and operational restriction.
