Car overturns in Shiney Row injuring elderly woman

An elderly woman suffered fractured ribs, cuts and bruises after her car overturned between Shiney Row and Herrington Burn.

The victim had to be cut free from her vehicle after the car overturned on the A182 road at 2.15 pm on Tuesday afternoon (April 1).

A parked car was said to be involved in the accident.

Shiney Row local, Frankie Maguire, 19, witnessed the crash.

He said: The car swerved and she just went flying 7ft in the air, and then the car started spinning when it landed. I quickly ran over and rang an ambulance and checked that she was breathing all right.”

After the accident the woman was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle to be treated for her injuries.

A spokesperson for Northumbria police said: “At 2.18pm police were called to a collision where a car had overturned.

“The accident happened between Mill Terrace and Hedworth Terrace in Sunderland. The driver of the Nissan suffered from fractured ribs, cuts and bruises. She was taken to hospital to be monitored.”
