Comic Con is coming to Sunderland and local artists are excited about the prospect of the event.

Art students and illustrators in the Sunderland area are keen to be able to use the two-day function, happening August 8 and 9, as a chance to show off their art as well as meet like-minded locals.

Thomas Boyle, 24, a Freelance Illustrator from Sunderland, said: “I think a mix of exposure and some sales would be the best to get from the table.”

“It’s just a good excuse to meet up and see what other people are doing and making, the local scene is very friendly and quite inclusive so that’s good!”

Local businesses agree that the event could be good for local comic book and game stores. Sunderland Games workshop Manager, Ali French, 26, said: “I would think it would have a positive impact on business because there is a shared interest.”

Although Smith hasn’t been asked to be involved with the event he is still has high hopes from drawing business to his store.

After the successes of Glasgow Comic Con events, Black Hearted Press are hoping to draw a crowd of 1,600 graphic novel and art fans as well as superhero and fantasy cosplayers.

Sha Nazir of Black Hearted Press said: “Our event is an actual comic con, in the truest sense, we are a comic book festival, so all of our guests are comic book writers, artists, creators and publishers.

“Our mission is to promote comics, books and graphic novels as an art/entertainment and to encourage patrons to try something new and support local creators.”

With confirmed guest such as Hannah Berry, illustrator of Graphic Novel “Britten and Brülightly”, British comic book artist Bryan Talbot and actress Tanya Roberts, the event looks to be exciting and definitely something that old and new fans can enjoy.

The convention will give fans the chance to interact with people of the industry as well as a chance to promote their own work. The event holders are hoping it will give patrons the chance to try something new and to support local artists.

Tickets are available now at www.sunderlandcomiccon.com.
