A new American sweet shop has recently opened in the city’s Bridges shopping centre.
American Candy World offers many stateside items from various Reese’s confectionery to Pop Tarts to Nerds, as well as a wide variety of retro sweets and much-loved British classics.
The shop is yet another addition in a line of American treats outlets to the Bridges after Krispy Kremes – an American donuts specialist.
Mr Muhammad J Bal, 28, a worker at the shop, said: “I hope the location of the shop will attract more customers to The Bridges.
“Business has been okay so far with Saturday happening to be busy – though not on the other days. And we don’t have regulars, it’s always different people.
“But most of the money goes towards getting the products in for the shop.
“It isn’t part of a chain of store, it’s just an independent store run by the owner. We have new products released in America in the shop and since the supplier is American it’s not any extra trouble to include them.”
Gary Johnson, 20, from Sunderland, said: “I’m excited that we have a sweet shop right in the mall that I can get to easily when I’m in town. I also go to Sweet Home Alabama but I think it’s not that easy to get to.
“Whenever I’m in town now I like to pick up a treat from American Candy World. There’s so much to choose from, and I think it’s sort of cheap even though its American sweets when they’re not that easy to get hold of.”
Samantha Czwordon-Wright, communications manager at The Bridges, said: “We are delighted to have American Candy World as part of the bridges. It would absolutely benefit the bridges with its unique offering of American sweets and everyone can enjoy what they sell.”
The store will be open from 9am till 5:30 pm, Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 5pm on Sundays.
