Extra police will be patrolling in towns and city centres on Sunday as football fans get together to watch the Capital One Cup final.

Many of the region’s pubs are screening the League Cup final between Sunderland vs Manchester City, and officers are expecting large numbers of football fans coming out to enjoy the game with family and friends.

Northumbria Police Chief Superintendent Steve Neill said: “We work closely with licensees across the force to make sure premises are a safe environment for people to enjoy themselves. Police officers regularly visit busier bars to help support staff in managing their licensed premises responsibly and to reassure customers.

“We want to get the message across that we want people to enjoy watching what is a great sporting event for the North East while behaving responsibly.

“We’re asking people to think about their behaviour, the effect it can have on others and the potential consequences for both themselves and others.

“We want our cities and town centres to be a safe place for all and to celebrate what is a fantastic achievement for Sunderland Football Club.”

Officers will be carrying out patrols in the busier areas around licensed premises and visiting pubs. They are also working closely with Pubwatch schemes which can ban trouble-makers from visiting pubs in the area.

University of Sunderland Students’ Union are also set to screen the game live at the Bonded Warehouse from 12pm-8pm on Sunday.
