Newcastle Falcons Rugby Club has appointed two students from the University of Sunderland to help raise their profile as a Premiership Rugby Club.
Students and brand managers Bryony Exton and Rebecca Auchterlonie will be around the University of Sunderland, selling tickets for specific home games throughout the rest of the season to students at a discounted price of £10.
Student Rebecca said: “I love rugby so this job is enjoyable for me. I think it’ll be a huge benefit to the club as I have worked there over a year now and I feel the numbers of people are falling.
“If we can get the crowds back behind the Falcons, I think it will really help them improve their performance.”
The Falcons are offering university students in the North East discounted tickets if bought through their relevant student brand manager.
The team are looking to increase their influence in the student community and are planning to use the brand managers as the basis for further expansion next season.
Andrew Robson, Newcastle Falcons ticketing coordinator, said: “We’re looking to connect to the large North East audience in general, and with total of 100,000 students at local universities, it’s a very significant untapped market.
“Our numbers in the past have been small and we’re trying to expand it anyway we can, so trying to bring in the student crowd makes the most sense.”
Following their relegation in 2012 the team worked hard to fight their way back into the Premiership and succeeded, losing only one game in the entire season.
They are also aiming to become a club that represents rugby union in the entirety of the North East and not specifically Newcastle.
Falcons club stalwart Rob Vickers said: “Our current supporters already love coming and watching the games as it is a really friendly environment. Students help to create a tremendous atmosphere which makes a huge difference for us when we play.”
The two student-brand managers can be contacted on Twitter or via the Sunderland University Falcons Tickets Facebook group.
The next available game is May 10.
