Sunderland City Council Approve New 4,000 Capacity Gig Venue

Plans

Sunderland Council have approved plans for a new music venue.

The new 4,000 capacity venue is set for the Beacon of Light sports complex and will look to bring more big name acts to the city.

It will be twice the size of Newcastle’s O2 Academy, rivalling the academy for the hottest music gigs.

As part of the proposals for the Beacon of Light complex, the music venue will be situated alongside a sports hall.

The plans were unanimously approved by members of Sunderland City Council North Development Control Committee.

A three-storey front of house area will include the reception, ticket office and a merchandise area, while the rear will have adequate space for up to six articulated vehicles.

The facilities will also include external floodlit 3G pitches with both indoor and outdoor viewing space, first aid and treatment areas, a bar and lounge, flexible classrooms with IT facilities, office and lecture space.

We spoke to Frankie & The Heartstrings drummer and Pop Recs LTD owner Dave Harper to hear what he had to say.
