With Transfer Deadline Day about to unveil its many twists and turns, here are our top five most memorable signings Sunderland have made on this notorious, bi-annual event.
Alan Hutton- 2010:
He won’t be remembered for his brief loan spell at Sunderland but Scottish International, Alan Hutton was certainly an important deadline day signing for Sunderland. He helped to secure the team’s place in the league for the following year and a 13th place finish.
Danny Graham- 2013:
For a striker, his record at Sunderland wasn’t exactly jaw-dropping but with a 3-0 derby win over Newcastle and a man of the match caliber performance, Graham will be fondly remembered by the Wearside faithful.
Sully Muntari- 2011:
Ghanaian international, Sully Muntari was a surprise move from to Sunderland in 2011 and the Ivorian was a solid player for the Black Cats, helping them reach the top ten in the Premier League. While he didn’t score for the team, Muntari helped to plug a huge gap in the middle of midfield and steer Sunderland away from relegation fears.
Andy Reid- 2007:
Ireland international Andy Reid is another high profile name that joined Sunderland on the January Deadline Day. He spent four years on Wearside, playing 79 times and scoring six goals along the way. He was then sold to Blackpool and now is under contract at Championship contenders, Nottingham Forrest.
Darren Bent- 2009:
Sunderland biggest deadline day swoop has to be England international, Darren Bent. During his first season at Wearside, he finished as the club’s top scorer with 24 goals. He spent two years at the club, scoring 36 times in 63 games, an outstanding record for any player.#####
