Plans for a 4,000 capacity music venue could transform the live music scene in Sunderland.

The venue would be double the size of Newcastle’s O2 Academy which is currently the main venue in the region for bands to play on UK tours.

The venue would be situated on the north bank of the River Wear just west of the Sunderland Aquatic Centre.

It is proposed the venue would be part of the Beacon Of Light sports complex which will also accommodate the Foundation of Light and be home to a purpose-built 3G football pitch.

A temporary stage will be situated in the 51 by 93 metre hall when it is not in training or sport use to allow for a capacity of 4000 standing.

Due to the flexibility of the space, a combined standing and seating arrangement would also be available.

A three-storey front of house area will include the reception, ticket office and a merchandise area while the rear will have adequate space for up to six articulated vehicles.

The facilities will also include external floodlit 3G pitches with both indoor and outdoor viewing space, first aid and treatment areas, a bar and lounge plus flexible classrooms with IT facilities, office and lecture space.

Sunderland City Council’s North development committee will review the plans on Tuesday.
