Sunderland City Council have given the go-ahead for a new emergency department at the Sunderland Royal Hospital.
The move will create 35 new hospital jobs.
The new A&E will include a parking bay for up to eight ambulances and an extension across five of the hospital’s floors as well as a refurbishment of the current emergency department.
The plans were approved by the South Sunderland Development Sub-Committee in December 2013.
The committee also discussed the possibility of a new bus route leading directly to the hospital.
The hospital has confirmed that it will be able to provide the same level of service throughout the construction work.#####
