North East MP calls for a ‘new plan’ following Grenfell fire

Labour’s Chief Whip called on the government to set out a clear plan to increase safety in high-rise tower blocks in Newcastle.

Nick Brown, Labour MP, Newcastle East

The Grenfell Tower Disaster claimed the lives of 80 people with another 70 injured; a lack of sprinklers, safety regulations and highly flammable plastic cladding helped the fire spread.  Speaking to constituents on his website, Nick Brown MP outlined the need for sprinkler systems, checks and up-to-date fire safety advice in high risk buildings in order to avoid disaster in Newcastle.

“There are thousands of tower blocks across the country and every person living in one deserves to know how this tragic event happened and what will be done to ensure it never happens again.

“The Labour Party is committed to holding the Government to account on this important issue.”

Although in favour of the recently announced public inquiry into the Grenfell Disaster, Mr Brown intends to question Teresa May’s Conservative Party in Parliament.

Locally, Mr Brown has written to Your Homes Newcastle, Byker Community Trust, Newcastle and Northumbria Universities to ensure the removal of potentially flammable cladding to protect local residents from potential fatalities .

The long-serving Labour MP has also thrown his weight behind The Chronicle’s fire awareness and safety campaign.
